Acceptable primary medical qualifications

To apply for registration as a medical practitioner in New Zealand, or to sit the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX Clinical), you must have a recognised primary medical qualification from a university medical school listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools.

The World Directory of Medical Schools is an extensive and regularly-updated list of all the medical schools in the world and includes accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information on each one.

The Directory has been developed through a partnership between the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the University of Copenhagen.

The information you'll find in the directory is a comprehensive compilation of the IMED and Avicenna directories. If your university medical school is listed, you can take the next step in determining your pathway to registration by using our self-assessment tool.
